TUNE-UP!

Are you and your team planning to run the iconic Newport Bermuda Race and looking for an early season tune-up? Or maybe you are new to the big ocean races and looking to start with a smaller challenge. Running 140 miles from the mouth of the Connecticut River to Martha’s Vineyard and back, the Wetherill is an overnight race run almost entirely in ocean waters and is the perfect way to sharpen your team’s racing skills.

Important Dates & Times

  • Early Entry (February 28):
    $8.00/ft

    Basic Fee (March 1 - May 15):
    $10/ft

    Late Entry (May 16 - May 27):
    $12/ft

  • The Skippers meeting will be at the Essex Yacht Club on Thursday, May 28 at 6 pm.

  • First gun will be at 11 am on Friday, May 29.

    Any adjustments to the time will be posted on yachtscoring.com

  • The Awards Ceremony will be held at the Essex Yacht Club at noon on Sunday, May 31.

    Reservations for lunch following the Awards Ceremony are available.

  • Essex Yacht Club
    Free moorings and dock space will be offered on an “as available” basis from Friday, May 27 through Monday, June 1.

    North Cove
    A harbor of safe refuge, this space should offer plenty of moorings at low cost. The North Cove Yacht Club offers limited launch service.

    Saybrook Point Marina
    SPM is offering reduced fees for Wetherill Racers.

    Safe Harbor
    For overflow, contact Safe Harbor, which has a number of marinas located in Essex and the surrounding area.

  • Certification necessary to meet the Safety at Sea requirements to participate in the race is availabe from either US Sailing or Storm Trysail Club. See below for links to each course.

  • A prize will be awarded to the Crew member who submits the best race photo, as judged by the committee. All photos must be submitted to “Wetherill@Essexyc.com before 8 am on Sunday, May 31.
